Imagine not having a “family” – or someone to turn to in times of need. Imagine not having someone with whom to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and life’s successes.
Every child and youth deserves to be nurtured, loved, and appreciated…to be connected for life.
We know that children and youth who have established permanent relationships with caring individuals, family, community, and culture do better in life.
So how is it that many of our children and youth in BC are still waiting for permanent placements?
In March 2011, there were 8,373 children and youth in care in British Columbia. Of these, 4,913 were in permanent foster care, 1,588 having been referred for adoption. These children are waiting patiently for a loving family. (Statistics provided by the Ministry of Child and Family Development, March 31, 2011).
What these numbers don’t tell you is that there is a desperate need for families who will adopt older children and children in sibling groups who want and need to be placed together. When people think about adoption they often envision babies. Older children and sibling groups are often forgotten in this vision of adoption.
Unless we eliminate the barriers, shift our visions, policies and practices, and significantly increase the services and resources available, these children and youth will remain in the never-ending holding pattern…
